CSR Underlying Concepts

CSR Underlying Concepts

  • Inclusive Business: a business initiative that, keeping its for-profit nature, contributes to poverty reduction through the inclusion of low income communities (individuals, micro, and small businesses) in its value chain … as either suppliers, service providers, or agents & distributors, and consumers
  • Shared Value: is based on the idea that corporate success and social progress are interdependent. A business needs a healthy, educated workforce, sustainable resources and proficient government to compete effectively
  • Base of the Pyramid: a socio-economic concept that groups that vast segment – in excess of about four billion – of the world’s poorest citizens constituting an invisible and unserved market blocked by challenging barriers that prevent them from realizing their human potential for their own benefit, those of their families, and that of society's at large. Focuses on the poor as a huge market but targeting them with appropriate goods and services, both in terms of their size and cost as well as specifically related to their daily consumption and production needs
  • Decent Work: Involves opportunities for workers that is productive and delivers a fair income, security in the workplace and social protection for families, better prospects for personal development and social integration, freedom for people to express their concerns, organize and participate in the decisions that affect their lives and equality of opportunity and treatment for all women and men

CSR Principles

CSR Principles

  • Respect and protect human rights;
  • Support and promote for national sustainable development goals and plans (economic, environment, and social)
  • Participation of employees in developing the company’s CSR strategy;
  • Offering stakeholders benefits above those obligatory by Laws;
  • Respecting international labor standards:
    • Child Labor
    • Eliminate gender discrimination in employment and working conditions
    • Freedom of formation of employment unions and collective bargain
    • Eliminate compulsory work
  • Create social dialogue.

Basics CSR Elements

Basics CSR Elements

  • There is a specific role and responsibility of the companies and business owners towards their communities; not just their bottom line
  • CSR is not charity although this does not preclude business from undertaking charitable acts or engaging in philanthropy
  • Enterprises voluntarily adopt socially responsible conduct by going beyond their legal obligations to workers, communities and society more broadly;
  • Core business: It is integral part of the company and CSR interventions should ensure alignment with a company’s core business or mission
  • CSR actions are systematic not occasional; they are strategic and long-term as is the business itself
  • There is a strong link with the concept of national sustainable development
  • CSR does not mean that business replaces government in promoting sustainable development, but rather it is a partnership with government and civil society
  • Business ethics, based on human rights is integral element to understanding CSR.
